Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day
June 25, 201
April 22, 2010, was the national “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day”—a day for creating a truly educational experience which can transform the lives of girls and boys nationwide. The theme for this year’s event was “A New Generation at Work”. “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day” does several things for our younger generation —it shows them the value of an education and what a potential future for them could look like, it teaches them about teamwork, and it helps them better understand what their parents do to contribute to the life they lead, while they are at school.
Meyer Tool was excited to have 12 children participate in this year’s event. We created a full day’s worth of activities to make it a fun and memorable experience for the children as well as their parents and our employees. We played games to learn about each other and Meyer Tool, facilitated group discussions, and provided activities (making Kaleidoscopes) to keep them engaged and entertained throughout the day. We also had them draw pictures of what makes them happy and what best describes themselves in different situations —this became a nice takeaway for the parent. Parents took time in the morning to discuss their roles and contributions at Meyer Tool and joined their children for breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, the children were given a plant tour to see the machinery and the type of work being done at Meyer Tool. They wore goggles, saw the action, and heard the noise from the machines transforming materials into finished products. The day concluded with a cryogenics show which produced many wide eyes, gasps and “wows”. Overall, it was a successful and fun day for all, the children as well as the adults, but the adults gained even more. The smiles on kids' faces and the “ah ha” moments made our day. Meyer Tool fully understands the importance of this day from the standpoint of improving the family life of its employees, and also because it exposes the youth of our nation to the opportunities available to them in the future. We’ll need scientists and engineers leading the way to new technologies to continue to improve our lives. We’ll also need machinists, welders, and other skilled tradesman to bring these new technologies into full use. We will continually need to find creative minds at all levels to face the challenges ahead, and we look forward to introducing more children to the wonderment of manufacturing in the |
